Cartel de la Sierra is a Colombian drug cartel led by Jose Gacha. It was formed after Jose Gacha left the Medellin Cartel.
History
The Cartel de la Sierra was formed after Jose Gacha grew a disliking for Pablo Escobar, the leader of the Medellin Cartel. Jose Gacha was a multi-millionaire and therefore could fund a revolution alongside numerous other individuals against Escobar. Jose Gacha had numerous emerald mines that further funded his revolt. Gacha alongside others formed the new cartel, however, Gacha was the main founder of the new cartel.
Gacha immediately opened relations with the Cali Cartel and the Autodefensas. The Cali Cartel was a long term rival of the Medellin Cartel. Autodefensas is a right wing group which combats Communist Guerillas. In the past, the Medellin Cartel has aligned itself with M-19, a Communist Guerilla. This allowed the Cali Cartel and Cartel de la Sierra to convince the leaders of the Autodefensas group to fight the Medellin Cartel. Cartel de la Sierra and it's allies also opened relations with the Potosino Cartel. A large alliance formed between Cartel de la Sierra, the Cali Cartel, Autodefensas and the Potosino Cartel. Together, these four groups funded a new organization, Los Pepes. Los Pepes was an organization formed to combat specifically Pablo Escobar.
